The Healthcare Workforce Coalition advocates for the safety and well-being of all healthcare workers, both physically and mentally. That is why HWC is grateful that a growing number of lawmakers are championing the bipartisan Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Reauthorization Act (H.R. 929/S. 266). With an additional 17 members in the House signing on to the bill recently, the total number of cosponsors now stands at 57 – and counting.
This bill honors the life and legacy of Dr. Lorna Breen, an emergency physician who died by suicide in 2020. If passed, this bipartisan legislation would be the first and only federal law dedicated to preventing suicide and reducing occupational burnout, mental health conditions, and stress for health care professionals.
Healthcare professionals face higher rates of mental and behavioral conditions, burnout, and suicide than other occupations, yet many avoid or delay mental health services due to stigma, fear of losing their license, or concerns that they could face career setbacks.
Healthcare workers should have access to the same resources as their patients when it comes to mental health. We must take care of these essential workers so that they can continue to take care of us.
